Mouth Guards and Splints

Mouth guards and mouth splints even out the pressure throughout your jaw and create a physical obstacle between the upper and lower teeth.

Many patients grind their teeth during the night while they are sleeping. Such grinding can cause dental damage. To reduce dental problems, placing a mouth guard or mouth splint during the night can help.

Mouth guards and mouth splints even out the pressure throughout your jaw and create a physical obstacle between the upper and lower teeth, thus safeguarding them from additional damage through grinding. They also reduce any type of grinding sounds a patient may make at night.

Mouth guards are comparable in appearance to those utilised in sports such as boxing and rugby. They are typically constructed of bendy rubber or plastic and are customised by our dentist to fit your mouth.

A mouth splint (likewise called an occlusal splint or bite plate) is made from a harder type of plastic that fits precisely over the patient’s upper and lower teeth.

Mouth splints are not more reliable than mouth guards in minimizing the signs and symptoms of night-time teeth grinding. But as they are made of a harder material, they tend to last for several years, whereas mouth guards in comparison generally last for less than a year.

At Light Lane Dental Practice, we can help you decide if you will benefit from a mouth guard or a mouth splint and we will customise them to fit your mouth.

We also offer mouth guards for those who are active in sports and require a custom mouth guard.
